Readings from the Mystics of Islam is a brief anthology and account of the history and development of Islamic mysticism, emphasizing the extraordinary output of mystical knowledge and experience attained by the great Islamic mystics and Sufi masters.  Its author, the distinguished Islamic scholar Margaret Smith, has included translations of the sayings and writings of nearly fifty of the universally great mystics of Islam, both Arab and Persian.  The passages chosen cover a period of over a thousand years, from the 8th to the middle of the 19th century A.D.  They are arranged in chronological order and each is prefixed by a few lines giving biographical details of the mystic concerned, though of a few of them practically nothing is known
